Harbord Village Residents' Association seeks the ideas of students and professionals of architecture and environmental design, local residents and business people who would like to share in the re-imagination, re-engineering and re-planting of the Brunswick-College Parkette (midway between Spadina Avenue and Bathurst Street in downtown Toronto.)
The challenge of this competition is the creation of an affordable design that will allow the parkette to become a place for meeting and relaxation for all, at the junction of one of Toronto's most elegant and historic residential avenues with one of its most dynamic streets.
If you are unfamiliar with the Brunswick-College parkette, examine the photographs and site plans enclosed. Above all, do your best to visit and study the parkette. Walk through it, sit in it, talk to those who use it. Ask yourself: Who uses the parkette? Who doesn't use it? How does the parkette work - and fail to work - in its present form? How could this prominent location be improved, to make it a place that is safe, welcoming and beautiful which serves all members of its diverse community? What could this parkette be?
When you have thought about those questions, share your answers to them with those who live and work around it, by entering the Brunswick-College Parkette Design Competition.
The Brunswick-College parkette site is jointly owned and administered by Kensington Health Centre and City of Toronto, Parks and Recreation. While both are aware of the parkette's problems and in favour of its improvement, plans for the parkette's re-design will need to be approved by both (as well as by Toronto City Planning and Heritage Preservation services) before they can be executed.
And - very important! Since funding is bound to be limited, the winning design will be practical as well as imaginative. It will appeal to all of the parkette's potential users - as well as its present users - but it cannot be extravagant!
Awards:
Prizes of $200, $100 and $50 will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. Prizes will also be awarded to junior entrants. In addition to cash prizes, entrants whose ideas are incorporated into the renovation of Brunswick-College parkette will be named on a plaque that will be placed in prominent view at the site when reconstruction is complete.
