Brazil > In 1984 a national design competition (whose panel was headed by Oscar Niemeyer) took place for a Memorial dedicated to Getulio Vargas in Rio de Janeiro. The winner was architect Henock de Almeida, and twenty years later, on 24th August 2004, the work was inaugurated to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Vargas death (he had been the president of Brazil from 1930 to 1945, and between 1950 and 1954) [vitruvius].
